Royal Leigh Runs Fast Mile

Royal Leigh gave the training a bright start at Riccarton yesterday by galloping a mile on the No. 1 grass in 1:40 2-5. This was one of several fast gallops on a track that gives fast footing.

Royal Leigh, which will run in the Ashburton County Handicap tomorrow, was ridden by ithe stable apprentice, A. Reriti. He has done most of his racing as a sprinter, but seems to have lost some of his brilliance for short races.

Royal Pic (A. J. Stokes) and Hullabaloo (C. T. Wilson) were abreast ending a mile in 1:41 3-5. the last half-mile in 49.

Hullabaloo is in the Barford Hack Handicap at Ashburton, and will take beating if he runs up to his best form. Count Pedro (Low), another Barford Handicap candidate, impressed in beating Matador (Daly) over a mile in 1:42 1-5. the last half in 50 1-5.

Count Pedro has not raced since the Wellington autumn meeting. He has won over a middle distance at Ashburton and looks ready for another sound performance. Wililam David (Swanson) and Donna Maria (Williams) recorded 1:44 4-5 for their mile. They quickened sharply to run the last half-mile in 50 1-5.

Ashleigh (Taggart) followed in 1:45 1-5, the last half in 50. There was some doubt early this week whether he would start at Ashburton, but his trainer, G R. Pelling. said yes-

terday that he would probably run.

Derailment rM. J. Skelton), a form runer in the hurdles at Ashburton, ran a mile easily in 1:48 3-5. the last half in 53.

KEEN SPRINT Waverley (Traecey) sprinted seven furlongs keenly in 1:30 4-5, the last four in 49. He makes a fresh start at Ashburton. but could still be hard to beat at seven furlongs. He is in" the Coldstream Intermediate Handicap, second leg of the double.

Studio (Reggett) and Kastanea (Collins) were paired in one of the mbst interesting trials on the plough. They sped over a mile in Imin 42 3.ssec. the last, three furlongs in 37 1-Jsec. If the track stays firm. Studio and Kastanea will both run prominently in the Ashburton County Handicap.
