LONDON, May 9. The M.C.C. has ordered umpires Rt first-class cricket matches to declare war on pace bowlers who ‘‘casually” smooth back their hair, the “Daily Mail” reported. Sometimes it is not done for personal smartness. Bowlers get grease from the hair, rub it on the ball and then polish it vigorously on their pants. The new ban keeps its shine longer than it
should, and fast bowlers are still swinging it dangerously when the spinners would normally be rubbing it in the dust. If a bowler does not comply in future the impire can order his captain to take him off and replace him. the newspaper said. M.C.C. has also instructed umpires to stop any fielder, apart from the bowler, polishing the ball at all—it wastes time,' they say.
