FALSEHOOD’S FORM

Good Showing At Yonkers ISpecia.ltj written for "The Press"] NEW YORK, May 5. New Zealand visitors to New York were heartened by the forward showing by Falsehood when he finished fourth in the International Pace at Yonkers Raceway on Thursday night. He had not had a race for more than two months and had missed the chance of a strong workout when rain washed out training operations on the Tuesday before the race. As a result, there was a general feeling here that he would be “run over” by the top American horses.

The experts were well astray because with a little luck Falsehood would have been much closer than fourth, some two lengths from the winner. Henry T. Adios. Falsehood was very keen early after starting wide out at No. 6 at the barrier and it was only clever reinsmanship- on the part of D. C. Watts that prevented him going to a tangle in the first 50 yards.

The incident cost Falsehood more than a length, but he was back within a length of the pacemaker, Apmat, at the end of the first quarter run in 30 2-ssec. Watts had to keep Falsehood up to his work to get the lead and it was not until the end of three furlongs and a half that he managed to head Apmat. Falsehood was not left alone in front for long. Royal Rick pulling out almost immediately and going to the front at the end of half a mile run in Imin 1 l-ssec. Falsehood trailed for the next half-mile, and with half a mile left he was under pressure to hold his position. The first mile took 2min ssec. and racing through the back straight the last time Watts had to use the whip a couple of times.

Falsehood was again moving up approaching the two-furlong post when he met trouble. Stephen Smith, which was stopping after attempting to get to the lead, took Falsehood’s position behind Royal Rick. This enabled Henry T. Adios to move up only one out and at the same time left Falsehood three back behind a tiring horse. When Falsehood had cleared Stephen Smith, the leaders were clear by at least three or four lengths. The manner in which Falsehood finished on in the straight, left the impression that with a little better fortune, he would have been very hard to beat. Falsehood has done well since that race and it would appear that he has a great chance of getting a winner’s share in his next two races As it was Falsehood won 4000 dollars for running fourth, which is almost the equivalent of the stake he received when he finished second in the last New Zealand Cup.

Hospital Loan. —Consent to borrowing £70.000 by the Ashburton Hospital Board was contained in the Gazette last night. The loan will be designated the Building Loan, 1963.—(P.A.)
