FREIGHT ON BUSES
Complaint By Proprietors (NJE. Press Association) NELSON, May ». The Railway Department's basis for calculating freight on buses being shipped by the Aramoana was designed to discourage such traffic, the annual conference of the Omnibus Proprietors’ Association was told in Nelson this morning. A rate of approximately £4B each way for a 30-foot bus had been quoted to a North Island firm. On the basis of the charge for other motor-vehicles at £8 10s for the first 20 feet and £1 a foot after that the rate would be £lB 10s each way. “On checking with the Rail-
ways Department, however, we find that they use an entirely different basis for calculating freight on buses notwithstanding that the vehicle is carrying passengers for whom the department charges the usual fare of £1 7s 6d each,” said a letter from the booking agents, the Union Steam Ship Company, to the operator. ’They mentioned that this prohibitive rate was designed to discourage such traffic." The conference decided to make representations to the Railways Department.
