THE STRATEGIC PLAIN OF JARS, in north central Laos, got its name from these moss-covered jars which are scattered over a large area. The jars date to pre-Laos times. The area is the crossroads of the three main roads connecting the Communist North Vietnam to the north and east, Vientianne to the south-west, and the rest of Laos to the south. A neutralist soldier is shown in the area, the scene of many clashes between Communist and neutralist forces.
