Avenue Ash Out; Ginkgo Now In Carlton Plot

An ash tree was removed from the trangular plot at the Carlton Mill intersection yesterday and City Council workmen planted a 25ft ginkgo biloba in its place. In the remodelling cf the intersection, the plot has to be moved about 20ft towards the Bealey avenue side of Park terrace, and the ash if left in position, would have encroached considerably on the planned fourlane carriageway. And, although the ash underwent some tree surgery a few years ago to prolong, its life, the root structure had become rotten; so the tree would have had to b removed witbin a short time in any case.

After the ash had been removed a 25ft ginkgo, brought from one of the

council’s reserves, was lowered into place on the Bealey avenue side of the existing plot. Work on moving the plot itself is also under way. The central strip along the Bealey avenue part of the intersection is now nearly completed, although work is still going on at the Papanui road end. Work will begin soon on the landscaping and planting of the strip.

Wiring is being Laid for traffic lights at the intersection. These are now on their way to New Zealand from Britain and it is hoped they will be in position by July. The operation of these lights will be synchronised with the lights on the Papanui road-Bealey avenue intersection
