SALES TAX REDUCTION

Plea By Motor Trade (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 9. The Dominion council of the Retail Motor Trade Association today decided to urge the Government to reduce the sales tax on motorvehicles from 33 1-3 per cent, to 20 per cent., the rate which prevailed before the 1958 amendments. Members said economic conditions had improved considerably since the tax was increased. The motoring public was one of the few sections of the community still paying the emergency sales tax imposed on various items in 1958, and it was time they were relieved of the excessive burden.

The Otago Commercial Transport Association wants the Government to exempt commercial goods vehicles, their tyres, and parts from the present sales tax levy of 33 1-3 per cent., says a message from Dunedin. The president of the association, Mr I. R. Pheloung, of Mosgiel, said his association had met this week and decided to make this approach to the Government.

He said the removal of this sales tax would help to reduce road transport charges by 5 per cent.
