Early Chathams Births
Sir, —I have evidence from Mrs Annie Renwick, who is alive at the age of 90, and was born at the Chathams. Mr Dennis Murphy came out after the Indian Mutiny and was sent to the Chathams with Te Kooti and Maori prisoners. Mr Dennis Murphy married Mary Boon; a daughter, Ellen, was born in 1871; in 1872, a son, Dennis; in 1873, Annie; and in 1874, Willie. Mr and Mrs Murphy and their family all worked on the Whangamarino farm owned by Shand and Cox. The first magistrate was Archibald Shand, in 1855. Captain Thomas held office from 1863 to 1870, The German missionaries purchased land from the Maoris at Te Whakuru, where they built their home and later sold to Archibald Shand in 1855.
