CAR ENTRY TO N.Z.
Changes In Conditions (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 9. Some changes were proposed in the conditions governing the concession on entry of motor-vehicles which were the property of persons arriving in New Zealand to take up permanent residence said the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) today. Mr Shelton sai at present an intending permanent resident must establish that for the whole of the period of five years before his arrival he had resided or been domiciled outside New Zealand.
“The Government has decided that this qualifying period can be reduced and legislative action will be taken soon to provide for a qualifying period of 21 months’ absence. The concession will apply to only one motor-vehicle ” Mr Shelton said that although the condition of 12 months' ownership and use •would remain as at present, persons seeking to take advantage of the concession would be required to give an undertaking not to dispose of the vehicle for two years from the date of import without the permission of the Customs Department He said this was in line ■with the conditions governing the importation of cars against no-remittance licences The problem of left-hand drive cars used in North America and in some European countries had also been considered by the Government.
Mr Shelton said subject to the 21 months’ qualifying period and the 12 months’ ownership and use condition in respect of the left-hand drive vehicle, the Government intended to make legislative provision to assist such people.
