Middle - Distance Win To Sampler

"The Press” Special Service

WELLINGTON, May 8.

Sampler scored her first open class middle distance win in the President’s Handicap, the principal event and first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Levin winter meeting today. She took the lead soon after the start.

It was a deserved success as she had been runner-up in her two preceding starts at Feilding and Hawke’s Bay and a little earlier she had filled similar placings at New Plymouth and Awapuni.

Sampler set a fast pace and ran on resolutely when challenged by the favourite, Fair Filou in the final furlong. The latter was not happy on the turning track and was iaist with five furlongs to run. He finished gamely, but did not look like overhauling the winner.

Foxdonna, after being in the middle most of the way, made ground and took third off Fairassan, which also came home well. The others were well beaten. The veteran Waitaha completed this double when he won the Stewards’ Handicap after being in or near the lead from the start. The dividend for £1 was £124 17s. It was Waitaha’s first win since the spring, when he was successful at Waipukurau. As d result he was only moderately supported, paying £l9 13s and £5 on the win and place machine. Toureg appeared a little unlucky as he was badly placed on the rail till the straight and then he had to change ground near the finish. In the end he was only a short length behind Waitaha. Astrid ran her best race in recent starts. She was accidentally checked at the start and was conceding the leaders several lengths commencing the run home. She finished fast and was only half a neck behind Toureg. The weather was fine and the track was fast. There was a fair attendance. On-course the totalisator handled £41,895 10s, a decrease of £4701 on last year’s turn-over of £46.596 10s. Easy Win Sampler scored comfortably in the President’s Handicap after taking the lead soon after the start. With a round to go she was followed by Fierce, Vivid Light and Taringama abreast, then Funny Story, Fairassan, Foxdontia, Precarious, Determined, Kilroy, Fair Filou and Waitoa.

Sampler went further ahead along the back and at the half-mile was three lengths in front of Vivid Light ,which was attended by Fierce, Funny Story and Foxdonna. Then came Taringama, Kilroy, Fairassan, Waitoa, Precarious, Determined and Fair Filou.

Sampler turned for home two lengths ahead of Vivid Light, with Funny Story. Fierce and Fair Filou (outside) next. Fair Filou challenged gamely, but Sampler still had a length and a half to spare at the post. Two lengths away, Foxdonna was third just ahead of Fairassan. Precarious was next, followed by Determined. Funny Story, Kilroy, Fierce. Taringama, Vivid Light and Waitoa. Back To Form Waitaha regained form in the Stewards’ Handicap after sharing most of the pace. Harvest Moon, Astrid and King’s Cove dwelt at the start. Waitaha began best from Truro, Sonare, For Free, Mias Spy, Good Samaritan, Toureg and That’s That

Sonare improved on the inside and at the half-mile was shading Waitaha, which was attended by Truro, Harvest Moon, For Free and DamseUe, then Good Samaritan, Toureg, Astrid, That’s That and Closing Time. There was little between Sonare and Closing Time entering the straight where Truro, Harvest Moon, For Free, and Good Samaritan were bandy, with Toureg at the head of the others.

Though challenged strongly by Toureg and Astrid. Wai. taha stuck to his task gallantly and won by a short length from Toureg, which was half a neck in front of Astrid. Harvest Moon was a good fourth and the best of the others were Gold Find, For Free, Wishing. DamseUe, Cove and Truro. Closing Time broke a leg and was destroyed. Reauttz:—

Inquiries At Levin

(NJf. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 8. Highball, favourite for the Muhunoa Trial at Levin, lost her place a furlong after the start After hearing evidence from C. A. Bowry (Travelling Light) and others, the judicial committee decided to take no action.

N. C. Treweek. rider of Sonare. the favourite in the Stewards' Handicap (second leg of the T.A.B. double) said that the horse had accidentally collided with Astrid soon after the start This caused Sonare to become unbalanced, and she hung out badly for the rest of the race.
