ADDINGTON MARKET Excellent Sale For Steer Calves

And Mated Cows The store cattle sale was again a big one at Addington market yesterday. The entry was just short of 2000 head. A good selection of steer calves met an excellent sale. Values advanced by about 15s a head for particularly the average to good calf. Heifer calves no more than held their own and might, in some cases, have been easier.

There was also a better market for older cattle with cows selling under strong competition at about 40s a head better. A big line of cows averaged about £24 10s a head. In the store sheep section best quality wether lambs showed a rise of about 3s, with medium qualities slightly dearer. Top ewe lambs were also slightly dearer, but medium and plainer sorts tended to be easier in a slightly erratic market.

There was little change in values for ewes, and wethers were, if anything, slightly dearer.

STORE I AMBS The offering of store lambs and store sheep totalled 5969 head, compared with 5977 last week, and included 4470 store lambs (4575 last week) 105 twotooth ewes (89 ) 871 older ewes (705), and 523 wethers (608).

Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd., sold: on account of W. L. Orange (Hamner). 80 four and five-year-old unmated crossbred ewes at 30a 6d; F. H. Denton (Amberley), 98 mixed-aged Corriedale ewes in lamb to Southdown ram at 46s 6d- K. C. Galletiy (Hawarden), 75 one-year mated Corriedale ewes at 40s. New Zealand Farmers’ Cooperative Association, Ltd., sold: on account of O’Halloran Estate (Glentui), 163 Romney cross five-year mated ewes at 31s to 38s 6d; G. P. Dennis (Hororata), 40 mated halfbreds at 365. National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd.. and.H. Matson and Company sold: on account of Eskhead Station (Hawarden), 299 Merino annual draft ewes at 14s to 15s. WETHERS Wethers generally sold soundly, with possibly a slight gain in values. A pen of two-tooth halfbreds from an undisclosed vendor made 58s, and Reed Bros. (Dalethorpe) sold 54 of similar description at 575. Twotooth halfbreds made from 57s to 58s, with older fine-wools making from 36s 6d to 395. Sales included:— National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., and H. Matson and Company sold: on account of Lynton Downs, Ltd. (Kaikoura), '2OB three-shear wethers at 36s 6d to 395. Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., sold: on account of Reed Bros. (Dalethorpe), 54 halfbred twotooth wethers at 575; Yaldhurst client, 60 halfbred wethers at 395. STORE CATTLE There was another big sale of store cattle but it was not quite as big as last week and was over shortly before 4.30 p.m.— about 45 minutes ahead of last week’s sale. The entry totalled 1993 compared with 2431 last week and included 1506 calves (1767 last week) and 487 older cattle (664). There was a remarkably good sale for store calves. The quality'of the main offering of these was uniformly good and it would rank as one of the best selections of the season.

Good quality wether lambs met a sound sale with values showing an appreciable rise of about 3s a head on the top pens. Medium quality lambs were fractionally dearer but there was no change oft the plainer and cull sorts. The gallery following the sale seemed to be a little smaller and did not seem to include as many active bidders. With most of the shorn lambs now carrying good pelts there was no great difference in price range for woolly sorts which, with few exceptions, were not as big as the shorn pens. The best of the Romney wether lambs in the wool sold up to 48s, with a small pen of Romney cross in fat condition making 58s. and average to good made 395. Woolly fine-wool wether lambs changed hands at 45s to 47s for the best, with good at 40s 6d and average at 34s to 36s 6d. Good woolly Down cross sold at 41s 6d to 465. For shorn wether lambs the best Romneys made from 43s 6d to 475, with good at 40s to 41s and average at 29s to 365. Best Down cross made 39s 6d to 41s 6d and others sold at 295. An outstanding pen of early shorn fine-wool wether lambs made 47s and other sales ranged from 26s to 365.

R. S. Bassett (Oxford) topped the sale with five Romney cross wether lambs in fat condition at 58s and he also sold 24 shorn Romney cross at 46s 6d. Hayes Bros. (Halkett) sold Corriedales at 47s and R. G. H. Stoddart (Kaituna Valley) sold Romneys at 48s. Down cross from J. Potts (Greenpark) realised 46s for woolly and 41s 6d for shorn. Mrs E. H. and the estate G. K. McLaughlin (Culverden) sold 120 shorn Romneys at 45s to 475. In the ewe lamb sale the top pens showed a slight premium over similar sheep last week but on the medium and plainer pens the market was slightly erratic at times and tended to be a fraction easier. The best ewe lambs commanded good competition but there was less buying power for the plain to medium sorts. Quality was similar to last week with a good proportion of useful medium lambs and several pens of attractive, well-grown Romneys and fine-wools. The best Romney ewe lambs sold at 61s 6d, which was paid for an early shorn line of 100 from W. A. Newall (Waiau). Average to good woolly Romneys made 52s to 555. Average to good shorn Romneys made 44s to 47s with others at 39s to 425.

The sale opened before a large gallery and interest was again strong so that there was a ready clearance with rates for particularly the average to good class of steer calf showing an advance of about 15s a head, with the top pens selling fully up to late /rates to possibly a shade better. Over the main part of the sale only an odd pen sold under about £l6 a head indicating the strength Of the inquiry, and on several occasions sales were made at £2O or better. Towards the end of the sale when small pens and mixed coloured pens were reached the gallery dwindled a little but the market remained a sound one with the odd better pens still selling around the money received earlier in the day. Best Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus cross steer calves brought from £l9 18s 6d to £22 38 6d, with average to good at £l6 12s 6d to £lB 18s 6d and small down to £9 13s 6d. The best of the small selection of Herefords made to about £l7 18s 6d, with average to good at £l3 Ils to £l5 13s 6d, and some Shorthorns made to about £l5 13s 6d. Steer calves sold up to £22 3s 6d paid for 13 Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus cross from T. C. Dickson (Waiau) and for the tops of a line of Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus cross from the estate H. Snushall (Kaikoura). Mr Dickson also had 17 steer calves at £2O 18s 6d. C. T. White (Cheviot) reached to £2l 13s 6d for black steer calves and the estate R. B. Johnson (Sandhurst) realised £2l 3s 6d for four Aberdeen Angus cross. A. McL. Stewart (Scargill) also obtained £2O 13s 6d for 10 Aberdeen Angus cross and T. P. L. Duckworth (Wharfedale) sold four blacks at £2O 8s 6d. Herefords made to £l7 18s 6d for four from G. G. Lockington (Reefton) and A. R. Turnbull and Son (Amberley) received to £l7 13s 6d for Herefords. The heifer calf market did not enjoy the same buoyancy as the steer calf market with values barely maintaining late rates but there was a good clearance of the offering. The best of the Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus cross heifer calves realised from £l4 3s 6d to £l5 8s 6d. with good at £l3 3s 6d to £l4 Is, and average £ll 8s 6d to £l2 18s 6d, and others down to £8 13s 6d.
