ACCOUNTANT STUDENTS
Jubilee Plans
With a current membership of more than 350, the Christchurch Accountant Students’ Society could look back with pride on its first 50 years, the convener of the jubilee committee. Mr G. H. Perkins, said yesterday. He was announcing arrangements for the jubilee ball and dinner, which will be held on May 17 and May 18 respectively. The society was founded in 1913 with a limited membership and scope of functions, and after the First World War set out to relieve the strain imposed on the teaching institutions, organising functions to allow accountancy students to discuss their mutual problems, arranging lectures from qualified men on the practical side of accountancy rather than the academic, and giving students an opportunity to develop their ability in debating and public speaking. A lapse of some years had occurred after interest declined before the Second World War, but the revival of tie society in 1948 had brought a continuing growth in membership. Close contacts had been maintained with other societies in the New Zealand Federation, and present membership was well over 350. “The society can look back with pride over 50 years of service from its former and present members,” said Mr Perkins.
“With such a background, the outlook for the future is promising.” The jubilee ball will be held in the Country Club on Friday, May 17, and the jubilee dinner at the Christchurch international airport on May 18.
