Kennedy’s Hopes

President Kennedy voiced hope last night that the potentially explosive racial situation in ' Birmingham. Alabama, could be solved by the people of the city, the Associated Press reported. The President’s position was described by the acting White House press secretary. Mr Andrew Hatcher, who is a negro “The President continues to hope the situation can be resolved by the people of Birmingham themselves,” Mr Hatcher said "This, of course, would be the most ideal solution.” The President would remain in touch with the situation through the night, relying on reports from the Attorney-General. Mr Robert Kennedy The President was awaiting a report from the Assistant Attorney-General in charge of Justice Department’s civil rights division. Mr Burke Marshal.
