SQUASH RACKETS Champion Club Held To Draw By University B

The Officers' club team, the defending champion, was held to a draw by University B, when the A grade inter-club squash rackets competition was continued last night. In the other two matches, University A. which was unlucky to be without G. A. Davidson, the top Canterbury man. through illness, went down to Christchurch A, and Collegiate, weakened by the absence 'of B. J. Shirlaw because of an ankte injury, was well beaten by Christchurch B. Points after two series are:— Christchurch A 4, Officers' Club 3, University A and Christchurch B 2, University B 1. and Collegiate 0. When M. J. Simons, ranked No 2, took the court to play the last rubber of the match between University B and Officers’ Club, he needed to beat D. J. Triggs, ranked third, in three straight games to force a draw for his team.

It was an encounter throughout of perpetual motion, but Triggs, for once, found an adversary who could more than match his mobility, and who produced too many shots. But Triggs made a great effort and, in the last game, after never really appearing likely to take either of the first two. he was three times "in hand” and needing only one point to give his team victory.

The second of these game points developed into a marathon rally which Simons ended eventually with a perfect lob down the forehand wall from a position in which he could only just reach the ball. Once he regained service his fine condition told, and two quick errors ended Triggs's chance. Notwithstanding some loose play, at times the squash was of a very good standard Simons, making the play, was the more In his shotmaking, and kept Triggs mainly in the retrieving role, but while Triggs could not match Simons in length or pace, he played some very good drops and backhand drop volleys. In other top matches, P. M. Hill held match point tn the fourth game against R. G. Pattinson, but superior length In the crisis and food touch in the fifth, proved decisive. P. L.
