REFINERY DISPUTE
No Settlement At Conference (N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, May 7. The Marsden Point compulsory conference ended today but the dispute has not been settled. The chairman of the conference (Mr S. W. Armstrong), Conciliation Commissioner, Christchurch, explained that although the conference brought about a resumption of work and compelled the parties in dispute to face each other around the table, no law could force the parties to reason or compromise unless and until they were ready to do so. “I offered to arbitrate on the matters in dispute, but evidently they wish to battle on a while longer," he said. “I am hopeful that the workers will remain on the job and that the parties in dispute will either reach a compromise settlement or accept settlement by arbitration.” Mr Armstrong would not comment on the nature of the dispute or the respective merits of either side’s points of view The conference resumed today after being adjourned on April 9 to give the parties time to consider each other’s position. The dispute concerns wage and site allowance on the refinery project.
