UNUSUAL BUSES

An unusual sight on New Zealand roads are two rearengined single-deck Leyland Lion buses at present plying the Nelson-Richmond route. Operated by the Nelson Suburban Bus Company, Ltd., the Lions augment the service provided by older Leyland buses.

By far the largest passenger vehicles operated on this route, the chassis have 36ftlong Christchurch - built bodies, which can carry 42 seated and 21 standing passengers.

Features of the two-door buses are extra-large windows with slim pillars for maximum passenger visibility, airconditioning and heater units, and a metallic interior finish to give a longer life and to eliminate repainting. Engine noise and vibration is reduced to a minimum because of the rear mounting of the six-cylinder diesels of 9.8 litres capacity, which develop 140 h.p. The engine is mounted transversely on a sub-frame complete with a semi-automatic gearbox and angle-drive unit, and is accessible through a hinged hood.
