Carries Nine Horses
■ptAMILIAR to many sport- * loving New Zealanders are the long, articulated vans of White Star Horse Transport, Ltd., of Auckland, which carry trainers, jockeys, and racehorses to race meetings in the North Island.
The latest fleet addition is an Albion Clydesdale tractor truck with a 10ft wheel base rated for a gross train weight of 20 tons.
Powered by a 125 h.ip. Leyland diesel engine and fitted with a six-speed overdrive gear box and air brakes, the Clydesdale hauls a 26ft. by Bft. horse float semi-trailer on journeys up to 500 miles. The float carries nine horses in separate stalls, and has accommodation at the front for trainers and jockeys, and storage space for fodder.
The entire body of the float inside and out, is built with aluminium alloy sheet. It has three doors, and the head partition for the horses is lined with half inch plywood.
Ventilation is provided by 12 ventilators and two scoops in the roof which force air into the front of the body. There are also two scoops fitted at the rear of the roof, which draw hot air out, and louvred ventilators along each side of the body.
