ROYALTY’S REVENUE
Duchy Estates Brought £30,378 (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, May 2. The Queen received £30.378 19s 2d in 1962 from the estates of persons dying intestate without next of kin in the Duchy of Lancaster. The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Mr lain Maclecd) told the House of ’Commons this when questioned yesterday on the cost of Royalty. The question by Mr William Hamilton (Labour) was the latest of a number asking about the cost of maintaining the Royal palaces. Mr Macieod said the revenues of the Duchy had been part of the inheritance of successive sovereigns since 1399, and were taken into account when the Government grant to the sovereign was ’ settled for the succeeding reign.
The total number of staff which administered the Duchy estates was 25, with a total salary of £32,250. The Duchy of Lancaster, a relic of the times when the sovereign owned all the land, consists of about 50.000 acres and the property includes farmlands, mines and forests in Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire and several other counties—and a pub in Manchester.
