SHAKING HANDS
Bid On Record Planned Today
Hand - shaking, pianosmashing and speech-making will draw publicity for Capping Week and the Multiple Sclerosis Appeal in Cathedral square today. At noon, the Mayor of Chiristchurcti <Mr G. Manning), will formally shake the hand of Mr Canrington Mi"ge, a student who hopes to take the marathon handshaking challenge from Victoria University of Wellington. whose champion recently set a record of 12,000 handshakes.
Mr Minge hopes to exchange greetings with some 20,000 citizens between noon and 9 p.m. At 7 p.m. an official party, including Cleopatra (a member of the student revue cast). Miss Canterbury (Miss Leslie Nichols) and Councillor T. D. Flint, will arrive at the United Services Hotel and give speeches from the balcony.
Two teams of “pianoreducers” mounted on trucks will give a demonstration at the conclusion of the speeches They plan to smash two pianos into nine-inch pieces in a race.
Oven Fire.— No damage was caused yesterday afternoon by an oven fire in a bouse occupied by Mr M. Aiono. at 38 Cranbrook avenue. One unit from the St. Albans station attended the fire.
