HAY'S ART PRIZES

1963 Conditions Announced .

Prizes amounting to £750 will be awarded in the third Hay’s, Ltd., art competition which Will be held in Christchurch in late September. Mr Arnold Shore, of Melbourne, art critic of the Melbourne "Age.” will be the sole judge. A painter of some renown and an eminent figure in Australian art circles, Mr Shore received the 1962 medal of honour of the Victorian Artists' Society for services to art. being one of the four so honoured.

For the last 10 years he has been associated with Sir Daryl Lindsay as guidelecturer at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. A past president of the Victorian Artists’ Society. Mr Shore has won many of the major Australian art awards, including the Crouch prize, and is represented in all major Australian art galleries. He displays broad sympathy in his appraisals of contemporary and traditional painting. . Two Sections

The competition, details at which were announced by Sir James Hay. chairman of directors of Hay’s, Ltd., will be divided into two sections. In the oil painting section there will be a first prize of £250 (this being the Hay prize) and a second prize of £lOO. The water colour section will have a first prize of £2OO, and a second prize of £lOO, this being a substantial increase on last year's prizes in this section. The sculpture and craftwork sections have been omitted this year, with a re-allocation of the prize money as above, and provision has also been made for four merit prizes of £25 each, to be awarded in either section at the judge’s discretion.

Entries will close on August 16. 1963, and an exhibition of the selected works will be open to the public from September 25 in Hay's exhibition hall. Christchurch, after which a selection will be shown in other main centres.

Entry forms are available from art societies and art galleries and from Hay’s, Ltd. No restriction will be placed on the subject matter of paintings.
