(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) FRANKFURT. May 2 The full impact of strikes and lock-ouU in the engineering Industry in the West German State of Baden-Wuert-temberg will take effect today, the British United Press reported.
An estimated 500.000 workers will return from the May Day holiday to find their factones shut down. The State Premier, Mr Kurt Kiesjnger, has offered to mediate in West Germany’s most serious labour dispute since the war. The engineering unions are demanding wage increases of 81 per cent. but the employers have offered only 3| per cent.
The unions called out about 100.000 workers in spot strikes on Monday, and the employers replied wiith a lock-out that took effect at midnight on Tuesday, the British United Press saod. In North Rhine-Westphalia, about 1,000.000 engineering workers have authorised their unions to call a strike in support of similar wage demands. Unions in Bavaria have cancelled their contracts with the employers. West German car manufacturers have said that they will have to suspend production within a week if the dispute continues, the Brouah United Press added.
