THEATRES CLOSED
Work Refused By Operators
Five Christchurch picture theatres granted permission by the City Council to run one show each on Anzac Day, were unable to open for business because the projectionists refused to work. Theatres involved were two in the city and one each at Papanui, St. Albans, and Ham. The operators will carry out their normal duties today.
The secretary of the Motion Picture Operators’ Union. M r Brian Alderdice, said that the operators unanimously declined to work yesterday because their conditions were “gradually being whittled away.” The operators already had a six-day week. The only public holidays the operators had at present were Christmas Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day. Mr Alderdice said there were moves gradually to extend the work of motion picture operators all the time. The move to open theatres on Anzac Day could be the “thin edge of the wedge.” There could be other moves to operate on Christmas Day and also for the screening of films on Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. “Until we get a five-day week we are not going to do this extra work.” he said. The proprietor of the Lido Theatre. New Brighton, because he has a temporary operator’s licence, was able t» screen films himself yesterday.
