Strong Note Maintained At Wool Sale

The was no weakening in the market when the fifth and final sale of the Christchurch wool-selling season was concluded in the Repertory Theatre on Wednesday. All classes of wool fully maintained the improved rates established on Monday with strong halfbreds and medium to coarse crossbreds tending to rise still further. The sale was an excellent one and a fitting climax to the season.

. Indicative of the extent of the demand, only 13 bales in two lots failed to find buyers at auction out of the first 11.000 bales offered. Later, the proportion of passings increased slightly but there was still an excellent clearance.

At one stage of the sale 41 consecutive lots totalling 1165 bales of halfbred wools were sold at better than 50d end seven times during this session 60d was reached or bettered. Among this wool strong haitfbred reached up to 61d per lb. A few minutes later 10 lots of crossbred wool totalling 233 bales all sold from 50d to 55d Some of this crossbred was cot ted. Compared with the last Christchurch sale in February values for most classes of fleece again appeared to be running 2d to 3d per lb better. A particularly good sale was enjoyed by average style Merino wools. While the better Merino wools showed a modest appreciation on February rates of about 2d to 4d per lb, some of the lees attractive entries were estimated to be up to 8d per lb dearer. Much Dearer The market was once more far above the rates ruling a year ago. Compared with the second day of the April sale last year halfbred wools were up to 7d to 9d per lb dearer and Merino and crossbred wools fid to 7d better. Preliminary calculations for wool sold on Monday and Wednesday indicate that the average price for the sale could be about 45d per lb. This is about 6d per lb or 15 1-3 per cent, higher than the average for the April sale last year. At 45d per lb a 3301 b bale would return £Bl 17s fid and the 40.838 bales offered this ■week would earn slightly in excess of £2.5m. The extra 6d per lb could put £330.000 into growers’ pockets. The main weight of fine wools again brought in excess of 50d, with average to good to good style wools making from about 53d to s®d, with top Merino selling to 651 d, halfbred to 63Jd. And Corriedale to Slid. Super Merino from Mid-Canterbury Jtopped the day's selling and also gained the highest prj.ce ©ver the two days at 85ld.
