FREE TRADE MOVE

Meeting At Canberra (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 25. What may be the first step toward the establishment of free trade between Australia and New Zealand in forest products may be taken at a meeting at Canberra next month. The Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall) said today that the first meeting of the joint standing committee to review and study the scope for a free trade arrangement between Australia and New Zealand in forest products “and other suitable items” would take place in Canberra toward the end of May. ‘‘Further meetings of the committee'will be convened alternately in Wellington and Canberra at intervals of about six weeks in the hope that a joint report will be ready for submission to the respective Governments about April next year. The joint study is being undertaken by senior officials of both countries.” said Mr Marshall. The decision to initiate the study had been taken at the recent Ministerial meeting of the Australian-New Zealand consultative committee on trade, said the Minister.
