REQUIEM MASS
More Than 150 Men Parade
More than 150 Roman Catholic former servicemen —3O more than on Anzac Day last year—yesterday paraded in Latimer square at 9.15 a.m. before marching to the Cathedra] of the Blessed Sacrament. They were joined by 200 boys of Xavier College in the march to the college grounds next to the cathedral before ■ going into the cathedral for the celebration of a Pontifical Requiem Mass.
The parade was led by a Caledonian Highland pipe band. During the Mass, a guard was mounted over the catafalque by members of the Xavier College Cadet Corps. A bugler played a salute at the consecration and later played “Last Post” and “Reveille.” The Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev E. M. Joyce) said in his address said that some persons were wondering whether Anzac Day should be observed in the same way as it was at present. Whatever happened, the people must never forget their obligations to those who died m the two world wars. Places with such famous names as Gallipoli must never be allowed to die. These places should become a part of New Zealand’s history. Historians should bear this in mind, and record it in the histories for schools. Collapsed At Service (N.Z.
