RECRUITING TEACHERS
Figures For 1962 (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 17. During 1962, 267 married women resumed primary teaching, the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) said today. A further 55 teachers—including 43 men—re-entered the profession from other occupations. Another group of 50 women and 62 men returned to teaching after absence from the service for health, domestic and other reasons.
“These figures emerge from a survey of teachers’ movements by the Education Department.” Mr Tennent said
Mr Tennent said the figures emphasised the two-sided aspect of teacher recruitment—the major effort the recruiting of suitable people for the training colleges, and the important subsidiary effort aimed at attracting back into the classroom certificated teachers who, for one reason or another, had broken off their teaching career. “The current year's figure, nearly 2000, for the intake of trainees into the training colleges. shows an encouraging response to the intensive recruitment efforts of the Government, education boards and the teaching profession.” he said.
