FIGHTING IN LAOS

April 18 Prince Souvanna Phouma, the neutralist Prime Minister of the Laotian Government, was today occupied with preparations for a festival as reports from the Plain of Jars indicated that the militaryposition of General Kong Lae continues to deteriorate General Kong Lae now is limited completely to his

headquarters at the Plain of Jars airfield, 100 miles northeast of Vientiane, and the town of Phonesavan, six miles east of the airfield. He is cut off from Khang Khay, 10 miles to the east of the airfield—a strange little town of wooden shacks and two or three substantial buildings built by Prince Souvanna as his headquarters when the neutralists and the Pathet Lao linked forces in the civil war against General Phoumi Nosavan’s Rightists, General Kong Lae still has some small sections of troops isolated behind the Pathet Lao lines, but he is unable to supply most of them.
