MEAT SALES TO JAPAN
N.Z- Hopes For Increase (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 18. Japan could more than double her meat consumption in the next three years provided she could obtain the meat at reasonable prices, Mr W. R. Coleman, general manager of W. R. Fletcher, told the Wellington branch of the Economic Society of Australia and New Zealand today This year Japan was expected to consume about 400.00 tons of meat.
In three years, a prominent Japanese meat processor had told him, the consumption could rise to a million tons. But because of balance-of-payment difficulties Japan could not buy all the meat she would like. Last year, for instance, no beef was imported a»t all, but Japan imported about 20.0QP tons of New Zeeland mutton, a figure which could increase this year.
Most of the mutton was used for processing, Mr Coleman said, although the Meat Board was doing attractive and well-planned advertising to develop a demand for home consumption.
