California w’ill soon require all oars to be fitted with antipollution devices to prevent crankcase fumes from escaping into the atmosphere. The California Pollution Control Board has approved two devices, one made in the United States and one made in Britain. Several British and Continental manufacturers have announced that they will soon fit anti-pollution devices to their oars as standard fittings. It is expected that such devices will become compulsory in most parts of the United States and Canada.
Pedestrians should realise part of ,t<he burden of keeping the road toll down falls on them, and not merely on motorists, cyclists, and motor-cyclists. Any day in Christchurch it is possible to see pedestrians commit the most flagrant breaches, frequently placing themselves in the greatest danger. Crossings and crossing lights are ignored. It is also a common practice for persons to stand on the road while waiting for the lights to change in their favour, and some mothers stand with prams pushed Out on to the roadway.
