KAIAPOI CHURCH CENTENARY

Celebrations On Sunday

Former and present parishioners and ministers will meet at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Kaiapoi, on Sunday to celebrate the centenary of the church.

A special service on Sunday morning will be conducted by the Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery (the Rev. D. G. Shaw). The sermon will be preached by the minister of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Christchurch (the Rev. R. M. Rogers). St. Andrew’s Church was the parent thurch of the Kaiapoi church. The first Presbyterian Church in Kaiapoi was established in Sewell street in 1860. Before this services were held in the home of a Mr Sidey. At first the church did not have a minister, and it was not until 1863 that the Rev. W. Kirton was called to the parish. Another church was built on the Sewell street site about the end of the century, but in 1912 this was moved to the present site of St Paul’s in Cookson street.
