WORK OF LEGION OF MARY

Address By Envoy From Dublin Mr.re than 200 members of the Legion at Mary attended an address by Mr H. O’CarroU, an envoy of the legion from Dublin, in Christchurch on Tuesday night. Mr O’Carroil was welcomed by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christdburch (the most Rev. E. M. Joyce). Christian love was more radical and idealistic than communism, said Mr O’Carrodi. It taught not love of those who loved us, but of those who hated us, and was not in the least “tame.” In Europe there were some areas, particularly in France, which were now known as “de-Chnistianised,” while new nations in Africa were throwing off anything savouring of colonialism, which often included the Church. Roman Catholic schools were struggling without State help, and . Roman Catholics were having to pay twice for education or attend State schools, which were turning out not apostolic Christians but cultured agnostics, he said. With these and other social problems, such as the aimlessness of young people, to be faced, there was a strong note of adventure to be struck in the evangelistic work of the legion.
