Malaya Warns On Tariffs

The Malayan Minister of Commerce and Industry (Dr. Lim Swee Aun) this morning opened the two million Malayan dollars Australian industries exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.
Dr. Lim said: “While welcoming the Australians in their efforts to expand their markets in this country, perhaps it is opportune to remind them of their past experiences.
“Like all developing countries entering the sphere of industrialisation, it is incumbent on the Government to protect its infant industries. So as to ensure viability, judicious use of protective tariff is. in the long run, perhaps the most successful method.
“We, in Malaya, must therefore, of necessity, apply for such protective tariffs to ensure the success of our industrial development programme. However, to continue putting into effect our liberal trade policies and to give our consumers 'a variety of choice, we have no intention of applying quota restrictions. “Instead, we shall work towards Import substitution through the gradual process of successful industrialisation.” the Minister said.
