Snowdon Constable Of Caernarvon Castle

LONDON. April 18. The Queen has appointed Lord Snowdon to the honorary post of Constable of Caernarvon Caatle, in Wales. The British Prime Minister’s Office announced the appointment today. The Constable of Caernarvon was a high-ranking administrative p*>«t in medieval times but today the duties are only nominal. The office, define from 1284, was bestowed by the Sovereign, or the Prince of Wales, in return for good services.

The Constable has apartmenta at the castle. Lord Snowdon’s father's home is nearby. See Meant Snowdon From the caatte. Lord Snowdon should be able to see Mount Snowdon (3560 ft trie highest mountain in England and Wales. Caernarvon Caatte has been described as the finest example of medieval fortifications in Britain. The present castle was begun in 1283 for King Edward I as the most important of his six fortresses for the subjugation of the Welsh. It was completed in 1322 under King Edward 11, who was born there. When the Princes of Wales were subjugated by the English Crown, the Sovereign's eldest son was offered to them as “a Prince at Wales who could speak no English” to preserve the peace.
