Tactile Unlikely To Race Till November

"The Press’’ Special Service

INVERCARGILL, April 17. The champion Southland pacer, Tactile, fresh from a String of brilliant successes in his six-race Australian campaign, will return to New Zealand on Monday. He will be landed at Bluff from the freighter Waipori. The three-year-old Hal Tryax colt will be given a long rest on the Wyndham property of his part ownertrainer, D. P. Dynes, his other part-owner, Mr A J. Dyne& of Invercargill, said yesterday. Mr Dynes said it was most unlikely that Tactile would be engaged for any racing before the New Zealand Cup meeting in November. Tactile would not start in the New Zealand Cup. Mr Dynes said. He said: "He’s got a lot of years ahead of him yet to take part in the cup.” The colt would more than likely be brought back into work In August or September ready for the cup meeting. Mr Dynes said he had been in work since last July and at present was in the process of changing his teeth Mr Dynes said Tactile had some very hard racing, and had to put up with a lot of travelling, changes of climate, food and so on and “deserves a long rest.” Much-Travelled

Tactile's placid nature, typical of the progeny of Hal Tryax, made all these things easy for the colt aaid Mr Dynes. He bad flown 3400 miles during his campaigns in New Zealand and Australia, as well as sailing nearly 2000 miles, and had “never turned a hair." He had flown 2200 miles in Australia, some of it with Cardigan Bay, and the way in which the two Hal Tryax horses handled the travelling had been commented on far and wide.

“He’s not for sale st aav price,” said Mr Dynes when asked If be bad been made »ny good offers in Australia Mr Dynes said a number of offers had been made and ail had received the same Mr Dynes said be had received a lot of-inquiries from breeders tottttned in obtaining foals frtmPwe horse when he was put to stud— mot only

because of his ability, but because of his placid nature. Mr Pynes aaid a full sister to Tactile was at present being broken in and looked “most promising." Tactics, Tactile's dam, is in foal this season to Garrison Hanover.

Tactile is the only horse in the world to have won five derbies—either in the field of thoroughbreds or standardbreds. He won three in Aus-tralia-Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, and two in New Zealand, the Great Northern and the New Zealand Pacers’ Derby. As well, he won the New Zealand Champion Stakes. From 18 starts he has won 12 races, been four times second, once third and once fifth tor a total of £11,700 in stakes, £5300 of it in Australia. Special Treatment His fifth placing was his first Australian race when he was suffering from soreneas in the stifle and pin joint This soreness was overcome by the use of “super-sound” treatment, which has been used by President Kennedy tor his back complaint. Mr Dynes said this treatment was widely used in Australia. A leading galloping trainer in Sydney. C. Hayes, was spending so much on it that be bought his own plant for £4OO. Mr Dynes said the treatment, which uses sound rays to penetrate the flesh, had proved highly successful in the treatment of young horses for shin soreness.

“If it hadn’t been for that we wouldn’t have been able to start Tactile in the South Australian Derby,” sa;d Mr Dynes.

Mr Dynes praised the Canterbury reinsman, D. J Townley, for the speed with which be adapted himself to the strange Australian tracks. The Adelaide track was two and a halt furlongs, with an 80-yard straight, and the Melbourne track was three furtongs with a 100-yard straight Sydney had a half-mile track.

Correction—The distance of the Symes Memorial Maiden Race at Waverley on Saturday is about six furlongs, not seven furlongs as published in the acceptances yesterday.—(PA.)
