RACING Yankinville Not To Run In Stakes

Yankinville was nominated for both the Challenge Stakes and the Waltham Handicap on the third and final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. Not surprisingly he was accepted for in the Waltham Handicap and left out of the stakes.

The Challenge Stakes is a weight-for-age race with penalties and allowances, and Yankinville would have had nothing in his favour.

YankinviHa, which has not won an open race, would have to carry 9-3 in the Challenge Stakes, but has only 7-3 in the Waltham Handicap. Yankinville is a four-year-old and scale weight for that age is 9-0 But because he had won three hack races worth £865 this season he wae entitled to a 31b penalty, making his weight 9-3.

It meant Yankinville would have had to give Shangri-La lib in the Challenge Stakes, while receiving 301 b from the Southland mare in the Waltham Handicap.

And by running in the Waltham Handicap. Yankinville can meet The Wanderer on 271 b better terms than in the Challenge Stakes.

Under the conditions of the Challenge Stakes. Yankinvtlle was weighted only 51b below Vitamise. winner of the Great Easter and Stewards’ Handicaps at Riccarton this season, but he cornea in on 121 b better terns in the Waltham Handicap.

Little To Spare Vitamise beat Yankinville by two noses in the Great Easter Handicap on Monday, end their second clash at the meeting wild be interesting.

Yankinville ran into a bit of bother near the half-mile in the Great Easter, and ground lost there could have cost him the race.

The state of the track will probably have a big bearing on Yankinville's chance. Though he ran well on a rain-affected track in the Great Easter he does best when the ground is flrm. and

his connexions will welcome any drying weather.

Shangri-La Arrives

Shangri-La was brought north yesterday to race on the final day at Riccarton. She is an acceptor for both the Challenge Stakes and the Waltham Handicap on Saturday. and will probably run in the stakes. Shangri-La came to her best form, aald that is of a high standard, in -winning two races after running second m the cup, at the Riverton Easter meeting. She will' have a big southern following in the race chosen for her at Rieearton.

Shangri-La is one of a field of seven in the Challenge Stakes, in which she has 9-2 In the Waltham Handicap she is top-weight with 9-5. and this race has drawn a capacity field with one reserve.

The reserve is The Wanderer, another remarkable Southland veteran, which also won at Riverton. The Wanderer, now a nine-year-old, beet the open sprinters on the second day art Riverton.

The Wingartui jockey, J. D. Panckshurst, will ride Shangri-La at Riccarton. Pankhurst had a successful Riverton meeting, and showed his versatility by winning steeplechases on Lucky Game as well as two of the principal flat races on Shangri-La. Shangri-La’s second win at the meeting was in the Fiord Handicap, a race she also won last year. Shangri-La mastered 9-10 in the Fiord Handicap on

Tuesday. Et was a clear-cut win, but she had to show all her gameness and class in closing a gap of two lengths to Ravelarton in the straight. Shangri-La was accompanied north yesterday by Royal Bid, an impressive winner of the Southern Champion Hack Handicap at Riverton on Monday. Royal Bid will run in the Gimcrack Handicap on Saturday. and wijl be ridden by S. D. Hawthorne.

Cheaper Land In N.Z. Sought

(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, April 16. A young Warwickshire farmer, Mr M. Shepherd, of Longbridge, was leaving for Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, ■next month because he saw no prospects for agriculture in Britain, the “Daily Mail’* reported. He was migrating, he said, because land in Britain was far too expensive. He had tried to lease all over the country but lease land was scarce. He wanted to set up on his own. Mr Shepherd won a stockjudging cup last year.
