TALKS FAIL IN MALAYA
Finance Bar To Merger
(N.Z.P. A,-Reuter—Copyright) KUALA LUMPUR, April 17. Vital financial talks on the proposed merger between Malaya and Singapore took place in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. But the meeting ended in disagreement after only two hours. No date or venue has been set for a resumption. The Finance Minister of Singapore (Dr. Goh Keng Swee) said tonight that the financial talks were not over, but were indefinitely postponed.
Dr. Goh, who was speaking to reporters at Singapore Airport, on his return from Kuala Lumpur, said no new proposals had been brought up at today’s meeting. The two sides had failed to reach agreement on a matter of basic principles, he added. Dr. Goh told a questioner that no compromise was possible.
The financial talks centre around the collection and disposal of Singapore’s revenue under Malayasia, and the proportions which will be the concern of the Federal Government and the State Government of Singapore.
