PIANIST TO STAY IN U.K.

Ashkenazy Has Soviet Approval (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, April 17. A distinguished Russian pianist. 25-year-old Vladimir Ashkenazy, has decided to stay indefinitely in Britain Mr V. Hochhauser, the impresario who arranged his tour, said the pianist had made his decision for "strictly personal and not political reasons.” Mr Hochhauser said Ashkenazy had the permission of the Soviet authorities to stay in Britain.

Tonight the British Home Office confirmed that the pianist had sought and received permission to stay. Ashkenazy recently shared the first prize at Moscow’s international Tchaikovsky competition with John Ogdon, of Britain.

The Russian pianist had been due to return to Moscow on April 11, but his Icelandic wife had asked him to stay. Mrs Ashkenazy has lived in London 17 years and married Ashkenazy in Moscow in 1961. They have a one-year-old son.
