CONFIDENCE NOT LOST
Man Climbs Pole As Test (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, April 15. A schoolteacher, Mr Frank Gates man, aged 51, thought he had lost his confidence, the “Daily Sketch” reported. So today he climbed a 500 ft television mast at Thornton Heath, Surrey. Half-way up he was spotted and a television engineer and a policeman get off after him. But Mr Gatesman climbed steadily on, reached the top, and spent 10 minutes admiring the view. Safely back on the ground Mr Gatesman explained and apologised. “I have done a bit of rock climbing in my time, but I thought I had lost my selfconfidence,” he said.
“I thought climbing the mast might restore it. I think the experiment was successful.” A police spokesman said no action would be taken.
