BOWLS Post-Section Play In Easter Fours

Conditions were still unpleasant when post-section play in the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s Easter fours tournament began yesterday. Play, was to have begun at 9 a.m., but, because the greens were wet, did not start until 11.15 a.m.

Three rounds were played, and at the end of the third round there were three semifinalists and two quarter-finalists remaining. The quarter-final will start at 9 a.m. today, and the semi-finals at 11.15 a.m. The final will also be played today.

W. Wilkinson (Hornby), after overwhelming A. Glendinning (St. Martins), 24-3, was eliminated in the next game by H. Fletcher (Canterbury). The game was very even, and when the bell was rung for time the score was level. This head was killed, and on the replay Wilkinson drew to within an inch of kitty for shot. Fletcher with his last played a perfect shot to rest Wilkinson back for shot and win 13-12. L. McKendry, who came through the section play with six wins, beat C. Rowe (Opawa) by default in the first game, and then eliminated R. Smith (Woolston) 22-18. In the last game of the day he had a great struggle with D. Finnie (Sydenham) before winning 16-13. Fletcher, after beating Wilkinson, started in fine style against R. Hewitt (South Brighton). With a single, five and another single he led 7-0 on the third head. Over the next five heads Hewitt and his team completely outplayed Fletcher, and with 6, 4. 3. 2, and 2, raced away to lead 17-7 on the eighth head. Fletcher took a five on the next head, but Hewitt

held command and won 25-19. After being 6-2 down on the sixth head. J. Simpson (St. Martins) never really recovered against H. Sharp (Dallington), and went down 18-11.

J. Howden (Elmwood) scored at will against J. Findlay (Amberley), and won 23-5.

After being 11-2 down on the sixth head, D. Langley (Christchurch) recovered brilliantly to lead 14-11 on the twelfth head against W. Cole (St. Albans). Cole recovered to take the lead, 18-14, on the sixteenth head. With only time for one more head Langley scored one, to go down 15-18. Results were:— Morrison Avenue Green First Round —W.
