ST. MALO WINS
Run From Behind
St. Malo came from far back in the field for a narrow, brilliant win in the Autumn Nursery Handicap at Riccarton yesterday. He caught the favourite, Morris Francis, in the last stride and wen by half a head. This was St. Malo's second start and first win for his Hororata owner-breeder. Mr J. F Thwaites. He made a promising debut with a fourth on a soft track at the Banks Peninsula meeting at Riccarton last month. St. Malo is a half-brother by Dogger Bank to Bridie O'Cally. a winner for Mr Thwaites as a two-year-old. Morris Francis ran in the leading line almost from the start. He was alongside Tundra and just ahead of Golden Craze going to the furlong, and battled to a short lead soon after. By this time St. Malo, which had been in the tail-end bunch at half-way, was making strong progress wide out on the track. St Malo ran the race right out under vigorous handling from N.‘ Eastwood and snatched a half-head victory. Tundra was a length back third after having her chance. None ot the others was really concerned in the finish. Golden Craze, fourth, was in a gap of four lengths and two lengths clear of Standout. Grand Salute and Trove were the best of the others.
