TRAFFIC PEAK
Highway Out Of Auckland (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. April 16 In five days over Easter a counter placed on the top of the Bombay hills showed that 107,555 vehicles used the main road soluth to and from Auckland. Senior Traffic Officer J. H Donovan said tonight that the highway had reached saturation point between 2 p.m and 9 p.m. on Monday Within those hours 18.000 vehicles passed over the counters.
“Just under 27.000 vehicles went through the counters on Monday. Of this total twothirds passed through between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m.
“It is a terrific tally. We cannot help the motorists when there are so many ” Senior Traffic Officer Donovan said the problem was caused by motorists all wanting to return home at the same time.
“They go away over a period of three days.” he said, “and come home over about six hours."
