SCOTT BASE FIRE
Little Damage To Garage (N.Z. Press Association) SCOTT BASE, April 16. Fire broke out at Scott Base last night. Men at the base were watching a movie which was suddenly drowned by the hooter and bells of the automatic fire alarm system. The alarm indicated the fire was in the new garage part of the recent £30,000 building programme. Fire fighters had difficulty gaining access to the seat of the fire because of smoke but the use of breathing apparatus by some of the party enabled fire extinguishers to be used and the flames were brought under control. The building houses most of the base vehicles including three weasels, a bulldozer, utilit vehicle, tractor, and a new staff carrier, all of which were saved. The cause of the fire is believed to have been the overheating of a stove. Damage is mainly superficial.
