TWO PRISONERS RUN AWAY

Warder Attacked At Paparua Two men, one of whom the police believe may be dangerous, escaped from a wing at Paparua Prison after assaulting a prison officer and taking his keys at 7.45 p.m. yesterday. The men are Edward Murray Moore, aged 23, a hairdresser, who is serving a sentence of seven years’ imprisonment for assault with intent to commit rape, and Leighton Noel Crow, aged 20.

Uniformed police officers, detectives and police dogs were rushed to the prison locality immediately the escape was reported. Two hours after the escape the police believed the two men were still in the vicinity of the prison. Road blocks were set up on all roads leading from the area but heavy traffic and. rain made their operation slow and difficult.

Crow was serving a sentence of one year’s imprisonment on two charges of burglary, one of theft and one of escaping from .custody in Wellington.

Moore is sft 7in and has a fresh complexion, light brown hair and hazel eyes. He may be dangerous. Crow is 6ft, has a fair complexion and hazel eyes.

Moore was extradited from Australia last year on charges of fraud and escaped from Addingtor Prison in January. He was recaptured on January 29 after being at liberty for 10 days. The prison officer, Mr Stephen Rogers, of Templeton, was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital suffering from head injuries. He was put on the seriously ill list and his condition last night was described as fair.
