DECIMAL COINS
N.Z., Aust. May Talk On Names
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, April 15.
Australia and New Zealand may have talks to explore the possibility of similarlynamed coins when both countries switch to decimal currency. The Federal Treasurer (Mr Harold Holt) said such talks might be useful. Mr Holt was discussing names suggested so far for the new Australian coins. “The decision to switch to decimal currency in New Zealand introduces another matter of interest,” he said. “Our relations, both commercially and otherwise will continue to be close. It might be convenient to have most of our coins similarly named,” Mr Holt said. “Australia and New Zealand have not had joint discussions yet. but such talks could be useful. The Australian Government is keeping the question of names open.
“But we can’t wait too long The new designs have to be struck and coins minted late next year.”
