Athletics SNELL WINS MILE
Games Event At Hastings (N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS. April 15. P. G. Snell failed today by a fraction of a second to run a sub four-minute mile in Hastings. He won the Highland Games City of Hastings mile from L. Lloyd, of Auckland, (70 yards) in tain o.Bsec. J. Davies, of Putaruru (scr.), was third. Snell recorded 60sec for the first lap and steadily closed the gap on W. Baillie, of Auckland (20 yards), and the rest of the field. Snell took 62sec for each of the next two laps and it was not until half-way through the last lap thait he forced the pace.
He took the lead as he entered the straight and drew away from Lloyd to win comfortably. His time for the last lap was 56.8 sec. Davies tired in the sprint to the tape and finished about 12 yards behind Lloyd.
Staivell Easter Foot-Race

A Victorian salesman, John Bell, aged 21, today scored an all-the-way win in the Stawell Easter Gift (130yds), Australia’s most famous professional fooit-race.
Bell, from the limit of 12yds, won by 2ft from the odds-on favourite Max Budde (Victoria, 7Jyds), with Arthur Carson (New South Wales, 81yds) Ift away, third. Bell, who had never won a heat before he took his gift heat on Saturday, clocked 12sec to run even time.
Bell is trained by one of the best-known coaches in Australian professional footrunning—Fergie Speckman. Bell’s victory was a shock. He started at 8 to 1 in the final. Budde was a 5 to 4 on favourite. Carson was even money. Bell’s victory brought about £2500 to his stable.
