HAZELWOOD. April 13
Marine scientists, using sen-' sitive electronic “ears." began probing the ocean bottom today for the sunken American submarine Thresher U.P.I reported. The scientists were reported as "optimistic" that they would find the submarine which sank in water a mile and a half deep with the loss of 129 men A marker earlier wa; placed over the spot believed to be the Thresher's ocean grave
The commander of the Navy task force trying to locate the Thresher. Captain F A Andrews, said he believed the submarine was lying on the ocean floor within six miles of its last-known position. Captain Andrews said scientists aboard the research ship Atlantis II were optimistic about finding the Thresher "although it will be a very tough job ’’ If the Thresher was found ht said. the bathyscaph Trieste might be used to photograph and investigate the hull The Trieste would be brought to the scene from the w°st coast of the United States
Captain Andrews said water tests showed no radioactivity from the Thresher.
