The dwindling population of Mangakino will be revived by a scheme agreed on by an Auckland real estate firm and the Ministry of Works.
Under the scheme, the firm of Barfoot and Thompson will buy more than 200 vacant houses and resell them to pensioners and those seeking holiday cottages. The 530 sq. ft. cottages will be shifted street by street to areas near the town's three small lakes.
The cottages, which will be repainted and renovated are expected to sell for about £5OO each
Buyers of cottages will no’ have to purchase the sections. but will pay to the Mangakino Township Incorporation annual rentals in perpetuity As the houses are removed the land will revert to Ute incorporation for farming use Existing services in the township will be consolidated in the area to be developed.
