Top Milers Beaten By Final Command

■The Press” Special Service

AUCKLAND, April 14,

Just 24 years after saddling Llangollen for the most meritorious of seconds, the veteran Tauranga trainer M. B. (“Paddy”) Abbot collected the £4700 Easter Handicap at Ellerslie yesterday. His runner was the three-year-old, Final Command, on which betters put nearly £BO,OOO.

The great weight of money made Final Command one of the hottest favourites ever to - run in a big handicap at Ellerslie. On the win and place it was a trifle nfore than half the total.

Final Command looked the winner all over . when he came out of a hectic, early rush, running effortlessly with the first four or five He was soon in front with his opponents going hard to keep up and he stayed there to the accompaniment of cheering and applause from all over the course In the finish it was Final Command by a length and a half from Poet's Pride, which had the same margin on Gauntlet (third). The next best was Royton and then the second favourite. Waipari With his 21 opponents nearly all well spent and most thoroughly beaten. Final Command slackened in the last couple of furlongs so that his winning gallop was Imin 3’ J ®“c That was the time Beaupatir, a three-year-old. went in 1C24 when he beat Llangollen by a head. It was then the race record which has since been reduced to Imin 35 2-ssec. Abbot had a part m the ownership of Llangollen and he prepared Final Command for Mr W. A Mellow, a farmer, from Morrinsville. Mr Mellow bred the gelding, by Final Court from Expansion <by Expanse—Navareena), a mare not eligible for the stud book. After being a moderateracehorse Expansion foaled Final Command in her first season at the stud. She died soon afterward when her colt was a weanling Won Last Six Races A big bay. with plenty of wh.te on his face and about his legs. Final Command has how won his last six races on end and eight altogether out ofJ3 attempts. BefoW tackling the Easter Handicap, Final Command had won £2970 in stakes He increased this amount on Saturday by £2925 and the Perak Turf Club Cup, valued at £2OO. which Mr Mello-w received from the GovernorGeneral. Sir Bernard Fergusson.

A Cambridge rider, G. R. Edge, with his success on Final Command won his second Easter Handicap on end. By the end of the day he had won the Easter, ARC Railway Handicap and Great Northern Champagne Stakes each for two years in a row. Last season Edge won the Easter and the Railway Handicaps on Otematata and Champagne Stakes on Tatua. On Saturday he took the Champagne Stakes on Fencourt.

For a start the win dividend on Final Command was shown by the infield totalisator indicator as 22s and the place as 19s. The pay-out in the finish was £1 7s 6d for both a win and a place. On Poet's Pride, the third favourite each way, it was £2 14s 6d and on Gauntlet, the 6/8 favourite. £5 14s 6d Of the 224.600 5s doubles tickets taken on Final Command, 15.762 were reinvested on Golden Muse, which won the second leg. the President’s Handicap. A four-year-old mare and a visitor from Taranaki. Golden Muse won the President’s Handicap, a mile and a quarter, very decisively Beginning the run home her rider, J. P Hayes, set her after Jovic. which had come clear for a bit Over the last furlong she had the race well in hand. Golden Muse had not previously shown middle distance form of such account although she ran a very good mile the other week behind Waipari at Te Aroha. On the win and place Golden Muse paid £9 9s and £3 2s 6d and her doubles return -.ith Final Command was £22 17s for £l. Jovic kept second narrowly from Blue Beard and Tatua made a lightning run into fourth. Conditions were very favourable. the weather being fine and sunny and the going good. The attendance was 25.941, compared with 24.560 last year. Lost Ground
