Eagle Threesome
The most-discussed golfer at the Christchurch Club’s Easter tournament has been the 23-year-old university student. M. B. G. Thomson. He played in the intermediate section, but his 36-hole total of 158 put him into the senior field for match play.
IB the first round he was narrowly beaten by C. W. Caldwell, but he had a sensational success In his afternoon plate match with B. K. Atkinson.
Thomson’s huge hitting startled spectators; at the eleventh hole, he carried the bunkers just to the left of the fairway a prodigious
hit. He had an eagle at the fifth hole, another at the eighth, and he was three under scratch playing the last hole. There his drive was hooked., hit a branch, and dropped among the trees, leaving Mm with only a very awkward stance available, about 126 yards from the green.
He played a 7-lron, with the ball near his back foot, and brought off a difficult flat shot so successfully that the ball pitched perfectly, ran on to the green and into the hole—his third eagle, and making his round five under scratch.
