MAKING WAY FOR THE OLYMPIC VILLAGE.—The demolition of some of the 200 houses at Washington Heights, Tokyo, to make way for the building of the Olympic village, which will accommodate hundreds of athletes from all parts of the world. Washington Heights is a large area leased to the United States to house the families of United States servicemen on duty in Japan. These families have been removed to another area on the outskirts of Tokyo, where new homes have been built for them. After the Olympic Games, the village area will become a national park.
